The Challenge of Defining Spyware

As the problem of spyware becomes an increasingly central one, the absence of a clear, coherent, and standard definition of the term has rendered serious discussion of solutions difficult. The Center for Democracy and Technology has convened the Anti-Spyware Coalition, which has just released a set of definitions for spyware and other potentially unwanted technologies. The coalition is currently accepting public comment on the draft version.

Public Support of Biometric Technology in Passports and Drivers’ Licenses Is Positive but Not Yet Assured
Most Americans support adding biometric identifiers to existing government-issued ID documents, according to a nationwide survey conducted by TRUSTe and TNS in March 2005. Including biometric data in identification documents such as passports, Social Security cards, and drivers’ licenses is perceived by the public to help prevent fraud and identity theft. But, at the same time, many Americans express privacy and cost concerns about government use of the technology.

TRUSTe Launches New “We Don’t Spam” Email Privacy Seal Program
This month, TRUSTe announced the creation of its “We Don’t Spam” email privacy seal, the first independent certification to reassure consumers that they won’t be subjected to spam when they submit their email address online. The program allows certified email senders to display a verifiable seal confirming that their email practices conform to strict privacy and fair-treatment standards. Pretrial tests have shown that the seal boosts email collection rates.

TRUSTe Introduces New Certification Process
New applicants to TRUSTe’s Privacy Seal Program can now complete their application online! On July 7, 2005, TRUSTe launched the Certification Center, an online tool that guides users through the steps required to prepare a Web site for TRUSTe certification. The system replaces the manual application process, thereby reducing certification time and improving overall service delivery. Online renewal for existing TRUSTe sealholders is on the way.

When Security-Breach Legislation Is the Right Thing to Do

Excerpts from the comments that TRUSTe recently filed with the United States House of Representative’s Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection. TRUSTe argued that any national security-breach legislation should be modeled after California’s, which takes a market-driven approach to motivate companies to prioritize security. This legislation has not resulted in a slew of meaningless notifications, as its detractors feared, and has made enormous contributions toward strengthening corporate standards and educating consumers.

First in a series of case studies being developed for general distribution, TRUSTe has profiled leading rental-car agency Avis as it upgraded its privacy practices. The case study discusses why Avis decided to devote more of its resources to data privacy, why the company chose to become a TRUSTe member, and how Avis has benefited from participation in TRUSTe’s privacy seal program. Additional case studies, each downloadable from the TRUSTe Web site in PDF format, cover different industries and different seal programs.

Webcast -- Email Authentication Implementation Summit 2005
On July 12, 2005, the Email Authentication Implementation Summit was held in New York City to improve user online confidence in email and e-commerce while enhancing deliverability of legitimate email. The presentation materials and Webcasts for all of the sessions are now posted on the summit Web site, where they are available for free download. In the weeks ahead, the summit organizers will be updating the resources section and planning additional site enhancements.

TRUSTe-IAPP KnowledgeNet events are free local networking luncheons open to all TRUSTe sealholders and IAPP members. Each KnowledgeNet features a speaker covering a top-of-mind privacy issue, followed by an opportunity for networking.
