TRUSTe Launches Whitelist of Certified Downloadable Applications
TRUSTe has released its new whitelist for applications that have passed the certification process for downloadable software. Among other requirements, these applications clearly communicate key functionalities and obtain informed consumer consent prior to download. The certification program encourages businesses to use the whitelist as a means to promote business decisions regarding advertising, partnering and distributing software products.

COPPA: The First Five Years
The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act is five years old and according to the Federal Trade Commission has been effective in protecting children's privacy and security online without burdening website operators, and in general, has had a positive effect on website development. The FTC's report assesses the past five years as well as identifies future issues to watch for, such as social networking and age verification.

Tip: Minimize data collection on your Web site -- only collect enough personal data from visitors to provide them with your products or services or to allow them to participate in an activity on the site.
It is now common practice for Web sites to obtain information from users by requiring them to submit personal information before granting access to the site or certain sections of it. However, the less information you collect, the better. Web site users are more willing to provide more information as it is needed or if an incentive is provided.
