TRUSTe Conducts Inquiry Into Disney Privacy Practices

February 1, 2001 – TRUSTe today advises the Web community that it has begun an inquiry following The Walt Disney Company's decision to cease operations of the Go.com Web site. Specifically, TRUSTe is looking into Disney's plans regarding the personally identifiable information collected by its subsidiary the Walt Disney Internet Group and its site Go.com.

Go.com is a licensee of the TRUSTe Privacy Seal Program. The Go.com privacy statement, which was certified and overseen by TRUSTe, states "ŠGo.com will not disclose your personal information to third parties without your consent." In a series of calls already held, Disney representatives have assured TRUSTe that the company does not intend to violate its TRUSTe-certified privacy statement. As a third party oversight program, TRUSTe has indicated that it will work with the company to ensure that consumers are protected during the Go.com shutdown.

Today's advisory comes on the heels of the court approved Toysmart.com bankruptcy settlement, in which Disney agreed to pay Toysmart.com creditors to destroy its customer database.

TRUSTe will continue to keep the Web community apprised of any developments as they arise.
