TRUSTe was formed in 1997, in San Francisco, as a non-profit association to provide businesses with a service which enabled them to design and follow best practices pertaining to the collection and use of personal information on their websites.
During our first ten years, we engaged with hundreds of businesses, large and small, across a wide range of industries. The internet was primarily a PC / website centric world and solutions were introduced to address the emerging privacy challenges associated with email marketing, online downloads, and marketing to children.
After years of hype, the online world began undergoing a massive transformation with the rapid adoption of smartphones, cloud services, and practices like behavioral advertising. In 2008, we converted to a for-profit company, backed by venture capital investment, allowing us to make additional investments in our products to address the rapid adoption of new online technologies.
The world of online privacy looks dramatically different today than it did 15 years ago – as does TRUSTe. In the past four years we have developed robust technology platforms and rapidly expanded the scope and scale of our privacy certifications and services, enabling companies to provide consumers with high levels of transparency and control over how their data is used across all major online channels.
Today we have over 5,000 active clients, resolve over 8,000 consumer disputes per year, employ over 120 people, and operate offices across the US and Europe. While website certifications continue to be a major focus, and our Seal is displayed on websites hundreds of millions of time per year, we are also working to help companies manage their privacy practices on everything from mobile apps to cloud services to targeted advertising.
