HP, Intuit and AOL named Most Trusted Companies for Privacy of 2007

The Most Trusted Company for Privacy Award is designed to celebrate the companies who take active measures to protect and inform their consumers and to encourage a safer online ecosystem. In conjunction with the Ponemon Institute, TRUSTe conducted a two-stage survey to gauge the privacy policies and practices of over 200 companies. The twenty companies rated most trusted in an unaided consumer survey moved on to the expert review where policies, practices, and execution were tested for consistent care with regard to privacy issues. The expert review included an evaluation of policies and practices as well as interaction with support staff.

The Plus Privacy with TRUSTe program powered by buySAFE is a solution for online merchants with simple data collection and use practices to obtain TRUSTe Web Privacy seal certification.  The program is presented in partnership with buySAFE who bonds transactions of its members. Examples of qualifications that merchants must meet are:

• Certified as a bonded buySAFE merchant.
• Do not collect PII through their Web site on behalf of another company.
• Do not collect PII from children under the age of 13.
• Do not have forums, message boards, or chat rooms on their Web site.
• Do not offer free downloadable software applications through the Web site.
